The 10 Safest Countries in Latin America in 2026 (3 of 6)

7. Panama

Panama has become something of a tax haven, which is why you’re bound to see wealthy businessmen driving around in luxury cars and glitzy high-rise apartments. But even then, the amount of poverty is shocking, and the contrast quite jarring. It’s also kind of cool and weird that you have a Miami-like skyline and then after a 15-minute Uber ride you can find yourself in a tropical jungle. Insider tip: if you’re looking for turquoise water and “over-the-water” bungalows, Veracruz and other beaches near Panama City are NOT where you’ll find them. Opt for Bocas del Toro or the San Blas Islands instead.

6. Bolivia

Known as the “Tibet of the Americans” due to its high altitude, Bolivia rates high on our safe list because, while you need to watch out for pickpockets on the public buses and bustling markets (something you’d do in any major Western city anyway), violence against tourists really isn’t a thing that happens as long as you don’t engage in alcohol-fueled shenanigans. The country is home to the world’s largest salt flat, and Isla del Sol is believed to be the birthplace of the Inca and features ancient ruins worth exploring.
