Instead of recognizing your self-worth, you go down a path of self-hatred in which you convince yourself that there are no good resolutions. As a result, you might choose alcohol or drugs to cope with the pain. Or you develop an eating disorder as a means of punishing yourself for not meeting your unrealistic expectations of how society should view you. Of course, in many cases, people who have a toxic relationship with themselves get into relationships with others who are abusive.
