10 Science-Backed Strategies For Waking Up Faster in the Mornings (2 of 6)

2. You don’t need to ditch coffee entirely (just drink less of it)

If you love coffee, you’ll be pleased to learn that enhancing your morning routine doesn’t necessitate giving it up entirely. The caffeine in coffee inhibits adenosine, a chemical that causes you to feel exhausted, and so it serves as a quick and convenient pick-me-up. The issue arises when you consume too much caffeine and then develop a greater tolerance and dependency on it. Later on when the caffeine wears off, the crash that occurs as a result of the adenosine buildup hits you harder. The solution is to limit yourself to a small cup of coffee so that you get a bit of a caffeine buzz without fully relying on it as your sole energy booster.

3. Drink a glass of water the moment you wake up

When you wake up in the morning, you are bound to feel dehydrated. This makes sense given that you haven’t consumed any liquids in more than 8 hours. Fatigue, a sign of dehydration, adds to the mental fog and irritability you feel when you get out of bed. To alleviate this, drink a glass of water before you do anything else. If you still feel lethargic, drink more water (and other non-caffeinated drinks) throughout the day. You will be better hydrated and feel more alert.
