The Simple Reason Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell Have Never Married

When it comes to Hollywood relationships, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are absolute unicorns. They have spent more than four decades together, weathering the pressures of Hollywood, raising a blended family together, and building a life that has lasted longer than many celebrity marriages. Despite their devotion, there is one traditional milestone that Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are not interested in achieving: marriage.

But the lack of wedding rings has nothing to do with a fear of commitment. On the contrary, Hawn has stated in multiple interviews that it is precisely their decision not to marry that has kept their relationship so strong. So why then would a couple that has been together since 1983 not feel pressure to officially tie the knot? It comes down to one simple word: freedom.

A conscious choice

Hawn has always been refreshingly honest about why she and Russell have never made wedding bells a part of their plan.

“I don’t like ownership,” she once explained when asked about their decision to remain unmarried. She noted that Russell agrees. As Goldie sees it, with marriage comes a feeling of obligation and even possession, two potential sources of tension. By not being legally bound together, it becomes a relationship where they remain together by choice. This is a philosophy that has carried their relationship for 43 years.

Hawn believes if they had gone down the marriage path, it would have significantly changed the dynamic between them. In particular, she feels it would have “taken something from both of us that we didn’t want.”

When reflecting on this, she got metaphoric, comparing the idea of marriage to a bird being placed inside a cage. Even if the cage door were eventually left open, the sense that she was trapped would remain. Just the fact that the cage exists would change how she felt about her freedom. Much like a bird in despair, she said, “I’d probably get rid of all my feathers and become a bird with no feathers.” This is certainly a unique way to describe a relationship, but it makes a very compelling point: love should not require either person to surrender their independence.
