A feeling of liberation
Hawn has made similar statements when talking about her relationship with Russell in more recent years. For instance, in an interview with People, she talked about how the sense of freedom that she feels is so meaningful. She feels liberated and unconfined.
As Hawn put it, “(We) are just living our lives together. It’s the right match.”
It is clear that this sense of independence plays a major role in keeping Goldie and Kurt’s relationship meaningful and long-lasting. Companionship, affection, and freedom serve as the foundation of their relationship. All of these validate their commitment to each other in a way that a marriage certificate never would.
Forty years and stronger than ever
It’s only fitting that one of Hollywood’s most enduring love stories first blossomed on Valentine’s Day, 1983. Fast-forward 43 years and they have been able to maintain it through the ups and downs of their movie careers, their family life, and all of the scrutiny that comes with being a famous couple under the microscope.
Their love story is especially extraordinary because they have made their children the centrepiece of their household when so many Hollywood couples would have made the relationship all about themselves. Together, they have one son, Wyatt Russell, who has followed in their footsteps as an actor after giving professional hockey a try. Kurt has a son, Boston, with his ex-wife Season Hubley, while Hawn has two children, Kate Hudson (who is famous in her own right) and Oliver Hudson. When they were younger, Russell offered to legally adopt them, but they declined because they felt his love and presence as a father were already there and therefore didn’t require legal paperwork.
Ultimately, Hawn and Russell have their own interpretation of commitment. It is important to stress that it doesn’t make their relationship any less valid. They have made the decision to remain together without feeling that they need to formally define their relationship through marriage. It doesn’t create instability either. To the contrary, after more than 40 years together, they have demonstrated a level of longevity that many married couples never achieve.
This is why Hawn’s explanation is so compelling. At first, it seems reasonable to think that she and Russell are avoiding marriage because they are unsure of their relationship. But in reality, it’s a reflection of the deep confidence they have in each other. They see love as a choice, not an obligation. And after all these years, Goldie and Kurt are still choosing each other.
