“Aren’t you supposed to let people talk?”
During a 2018 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she was attempting to tell a story when Fallon kept interrupting her. Eventually, Johnson paused, sighed, and delivered a perfectly deadpan observation, “Aren’t you supposed to let people talk on this show?” The host laughed and retorted, “If they know what they’re talking about, yes!”
The exchange was obviously good-natured, but it perfectly captured Dakota’s tendency to tell it like it is, even if the target is the host.
“That’s not the truth, Ellen”
This was another example of putting a talk show host in their place. In 2019, during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Johnson became involved in one of the most memorable exchanges in daytime television history. DeGeneres joked that she hadn’t been invited to Johnson’s birthday party, apparently figuring the actress would play along. But that’s not how Dakota rolls. Instead, Johnson bluntly responded, “Actually, no. That’s not the truth, Ellen. You were invited.” After DeGeneres had previously given her a rough time for not having been invited to her 29th birthday, Johnson had made it a point to invite her to her 30th, something DeGeneres denied. But when one of the show’s producers confirmed that she had, in fact, been invited, all she could do was lamely save face by suggesting Malibu (where Dakota lives) was too far away for her to go anyway.
