JD Vance presents a particularly interesting before-and-after comparison because his rise to national prominence happened relatively recently. When Vance became nationally known after the publication of Hillbilly Elegy, he had a youthful appearance and a somewhat informal style that contrasted with the traditional image of a politician. If you look at photographs of him from just a few years ago before he held elected office, you’ll notice a considerably younger man with a less polished political presentation.

By the time he entered national politics as U.S. Senate candidate in Ohio and then became Donald Trump’s running mate in 2024, his appearance had become more conventionally political. Now serving as vice president, Vance’s presentation is noticeably more formal and carefully styled.
