Kamala Harris Bought an $8 Million Malibu House and Apparently We Should All Be Outraged

Uh oh! Kamala Harris seems to have committed the unforgivable California sin of buying a very posh house in a highly exclusive neighborhood.

The former vice president and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee and her husband, Doug Emhoff, reportedly paid $8.15 million for a roughly 4,000-square-foot home in Point Dume. In this notable Malibu enclave, the houses are massive. You certainly aren’t going to find a starter home over there, that’s for sure. Kamala’s property reportedly includes multiple wine fridges, a private golf green, and enough parking for five vehicles.

Now comes the part where you might want to sit down.

According to the 2019 American Community Survey, Point Dume is estimated to be 94% white and 0.2% black. In other words, (gasp!) Harris purchased a house in a wealthy Malibu neighborhood rather than moving into a census tract specifically optimized for racial balance.

Haters will regard this as a particularly devastating revelation because Harris has spent much of her career discussing racial inequality, housing discrimination, and the importance of Black communities. I mean, why in the world didn’t she check the demographic spreadsheet before signing the mortgage? Shame on her, right?

Harris grew up attending white schools in Berkeley and later Montreal before attending Howard University, a highly-regarded HBCU in Washington D.C. Harris has regularly spoken about how attending a prominently Black college shaped her life. Reflecting on that experience in a 2019 interview with the Washington Post, Harris explained that what struck her was not merely diversity but the sheer number of Black people around her.
