Most Hollywood celebrities are reluctant to abandon their careers. After all, they have spent years working hard to attain fame and fortune, so why would they suddenly want to give it up? But every once in a while, an actor will indeed make the decision to step away from the big stage so they can devote themselves to their spouse and children. In their minds, a happy relationship with their family is far more desirable than a stressful, unpredictable career in the entertainment industry. With that in mind, here are four stars who ditched stardom for the sake of their partners stars who ditched stardom for the sake of their partner.
Richard Gere moved to Spain as a promise to his wife Alejandra Silva
When Hollywood legend Richard Gere married Spanish-born publicist Alejandra Silva in 2018, he made a deal with her: if she could tolerate living in New York state for a while (on a massive country estate, mind you, not exactly a studio apartment), he promised he would pack his bags and move with her to Spain. That time arrived in 2024. As Gere noted during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that November, he was grateful to his wife for spending seven years in the US, and now it was time to keep that promise he had made. His young children Alexander and James are fluent in English and Spanish, so they’ve had no issues adjusting to the language. In an interview with Elle España in January 2025, the veteran actor shared that the couple have never been happier with the decision to settle their family in Madrid.
These days, instead of preparing for movie roles, Gere and Alejandra devote themselves to philanthropy through the Gere Foundation. They have been recipients of numerous awards for their environmental and humanitarian work, including the Human Rights First Visionary Award in 2025.
