Michelle Obama’s Weight Loss Sparks Concern — Is the Former First Lady Too Slim? (2 of 4)

The concern continued to mount and evolved into a larger discussion that turned viral, which is still unfolding. After her SXSW event, Michelle and former President Barack Obama were seen on a date night in New York City. The media photographed the two, and once the images were circulated online, online chatter about her body started up again.

Commenters said, “Looking at her face, she lost too much weight. BTW, which of the drugs was she on,” and “Dang, Michelle on the Ozempic.” To date, Michelle has not addressed any of the allegations about her weight, and there has been no evidence to surface that she has ever used or is using any weight loss aids or medications. As with social media, this does not change the fact that fans are continuing the speculation, with the narrative moving faster than the facts or reality.

What is worth mentioning is that Michelle has spoken about her weight in the past, specifically in relation to aging. In a previous interview and in her book The Light We Carry published in 2022, she spoke transparently about having dealt with fluctuations in her weight, especially during menopause.

“I never used to weigh myself,” she said. “I’m not trying to stick to numbers, but when you’re in menopause, you have this slow creep that you just don’t realize.

“We’re all in menopause with stretchy [waist] bands and our athleisure wear on, and you look up and you can’t fit the outfits you had on last year. I have to be more mindful, not obsessive, but more prudent,” she said.

For many women, that shift includes not just weight gain, but also at times, losing weight due to shifts in muscle mass, lifestyle, and hormonal levels. MIchelle’s dedication is well documented, as she works out regularly and has been seen to prioritize her health. So the slimmer appearance could be due to her natural aging process and even getting healthier, instead of the more dramatic and negative possibilities that her fans suspect.
