When you’re trying to lose weight, you’ve probably noticed how difficult it is to do while on vacation. As someone who has been to more than 50 countries, I completely understand what a struggle weight loss travel can be. There are simply too many temptations and fewer opportunities to find healthy options. Perhaps you’re at a destination that is known for having cuisine that is both amazing and packed with calories. Or you’re on a long bus ride and the only foods available during the stops at the bus stations are highly processed snacks like crackers or chips. But as someone who has figured out how to maintain my weight loss goals even during my travels, I am happy to share 7 strategies that I use.
Plan Your Meals Carefully
Allow me to be blunt for a second. Weight loss travel is guaranteed to fail if you don’t put effort into it. This is especially true at mealtime. If all you’re eating for breakfast is sausage and fried potatoes covered in cheese, and then you’re having hamburgers for lunch followed by dinners at all-you-can-eat buffets, you can forget about losing any weight. In fact, you’ll probably return home weighing more! If you want an indulgent meal every once in a while, go for it! But balance it out with meals that consist of healthy, light fare. For instance, during a recent trip to Atlanta, I enjoyed some traditional, high-calorie Southern cooking for breakfast, but lunch was half a sandwich with soup while dinner consisted of a nutritious and highly satisfying Greek salad with feta goat cheese, black olives, greens, and a generous portion of low-fat chunks of skewed chicken.
