Andre Braugher, renowned for his roles in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Homicide: Life On The Street,” has sadly passed away at the age of 61. The beloved actor succumbed to lung cancer on Monday, December 11, after a recent diagnosis, as confirmed by his publicist, Jennifer Allen. She noted that his passing followed a brief illness.
Lung cancer, often linked to smoking, is a leading cause of cancer diagnosis in the United States. Despite this, Braugher, a former smoker, had quit the habit years ago.
Braugher’s most recent and memorable role was as Captain Raymond Holt in the hit comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” He starred in all 153 episodes, acting alongside Terry Crews and Andy Samberg.
Crews paid tribute to Braugher on social media, expressing his deep sorrow: “This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship.”
Braugher’s breakthrough came in 1993 as Detective Frank Pembleton in NBC’s “Homicide: Life on the Street,” where he starred in 100 episodes. Braugher was also known for his role as Owen Thoreau Jr. in “Men of a Certain Age.” His impressive career earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards among 11 nominations.
Braugher’s talent extended to the big screen, with notable roles in “Frequency,” “The Mist,” and “City of Angels.” A Chicago native, he studied at Stanford University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in theatre, and later at the Julliard School’s Drama Division.
He leaves behind his wife, actress Ami Brabson, whom he married in 1991, and their three children. Andre Braugher’s passing at 61 is a significant loss to the acting community and his fans worldwide.
