6. Praia do Forte Hotel – Brazil
During its peak in the 1970s, Praia do Forte catered to both domestic and international guests as a tropical luxury resort. It offered magnificent views of the Brazilian coast. But in a matter of years, currency inflation, tightening environmental laws, and newer coastal competitors marked the end of this paradise.
5. Monteneva Resort – Arkansas, USA
Built in the early 1900s by eccentric political figure William “Coin” Harvey, Monteneva was designed as a health retreat in the Ozark Mountains. It featured a grand log hotel, amphitheater, and mineral baths to soothe what ailed you. Isolated and on financially shaky grounds, it slowly declined. When Beaver Lake was created in the 1960s, much of the site was submerged. During low water levels, ghostly remains can still be seen by divers and kayakers.
