11 One-Time Luxury Resorts That Sit Abandoned (2 of 6)

10. Haludovo Palace Hotel – Croatia

This massive hotel on the island of Krk opened in 1972 with backing from Penthouse magazine’s Bob Guccione, who envisioned it as a casino-luxury hybrid to attract Westerners to Yugoslavia. Despite early glamor, the project struggled to stay profitable, and the Croatian War of Independence put the kibosh on its operations entirely. It’s been closed since 1991, and the hotel’s decaying frame now contrasts sharply with the stunning Adriatic views it once marketed.

9. Bokor Palace Hotel – Cambodia

In the 1920s, French colonists dreamed of building a luxury hotel atop Bokor Mountain as a cool-weather escape for Indochina’s colonial elite. Thus, the Bokor Palace Hotel became that reality. But as a result of economic and political instability, the establishment was frequently closed throughout the 20th century. Though modern development has revived parts of the area, the original hotel remains a haunting monument to Cambodia’s colonial past.
