10 Epic Construction Projects That Took Centuries to Complete

It goes without saying that cathedrals and basilicas take time to build. However, for the most awe-inspiring structures in the world, it didn’t merely take years or even decades to build, it took generations of labor to make them a reality. There were many events that slowed down progress, including wars, politics, budgets, and changing architectural styles. But what these buildings lack in speedy creation, they more than make up for in grandeur, perseverance, and a deep sense of purpose. With that in mind, here’s a look at 10 epic architectural works that took centuries to construct.

1. Sagrada Família (Barcelona, Spain)140+ Years and Counting

Barcelona’s iconic basilica, which got started in 1882, was the brainchild of renowned Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, who interweaved Gothic and Art Nouveau elements to create something truly one-of-a-kind. Inspired by nature, the Sagrada Familia features twisting columns, geometric vaults, and facades marked with symbolism. The Spanish Civil War disrupted construction, and when Gaudi’s plans were disposed of, there was reason to believe the basilica would never be finished. But thanks to the emergence of computer modeling in recent decades, the Sagrada Familia is scheduled to be completed in 2026, which coincidentally will mark the 100 year anniversary of Gaudi’s death.
