2. Monaco

Area: 0.78 square miles/2 square kilometers

Population: 38,300 inhabitants (2019)

This small sliver of Mediterranean coastal land within the French Riviera is full of exclusive, luxurious hotels where the staff cater to your every whim. Want to order grilled unicorn steak at 2 am? They’ll make it happen. Probably.

Do You Care: The country’s capital is Rabat. Okay, the editor is shaking their head and telling us, no, that’s the capital of Morocco. It’s not our fault they sound almost the same!

When you think of traveling, countries like China, France, Australia and the US are typically on the top of people’s lists. But those little micronations deserve some love too.

3. Nauru

Area: 8.1 square miles/21 square kilometers

Population: 10,834 inhabitants (2020)

Legend has it if you tried searching for this itty bitty island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean manually using Google Maps, by the time you do, the country will no longer exist on account that the sun will have exploded by then. This island is nearly half the size of Manhattan but 150 times more tropical.

Do You Care: Naura is the only country in the world without a capital city. Perhaps South Africa — the only country with three capitals — would be so kind as to loan one out to the Nauruans?
