8. Praia do Norte, Portugal
In Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal, they do everything big, especially when it comes to surfing. In fact, this beach is home to record-breaking waves. We’re talking heights that leave skyscrapers feeling short. In November 2011, Garrett McNamara set the record for surfing the largest wave at an unbelievable 78 feet high!
9. Cape Fear, Australia
Cape Fear is definitely deserving of its name. Extending around 20 miles south of Sydney, Australia, the waves are mighty powerful, capable of throwing surfers right into the rocky shore. The ledge is full of barnacles, which means you either have to be really brave or an idiot to take the risk.
10. Mavericks, California
If you’re seeking the biggest waves on the continental US, Mavericks is the place for you. Located in Half Moon Bay, California, this is only for the most seasoned surfers. The typical wave reaches 20 feet high, but others can be over 100 feet! Sadly, two of the most accomplished surfers in history — Mark Foo and Sion Milosky — died while attempting to ride big waves.
