Top 50 Most Overrated Tourist Landmarks In The World (5 of 5)

The Alamo, San Antonio

Alamo, Sky, Plant, Building, Window, Tree

The Alamo in San Antonio was one of the earliest missions that converted the Native Americans to Christianity. Later, when the Mexican Army attacked, a small group of Texas people defended the Alamo against the onslaught, which later inspired the movement for Texas’ independence.

While it is a great story for Texas and you get to see and experience the pride Texans have, you can do a ton of other things like visit the Big Bend National Park, enjoy the bluegrass music, or enjoy eating barbecue.

Manneken Pis, Brussels

Manneken Pis, Statue, Sculpture, Wood, Temple

An iconic landmark in the city of Brussels, the statue literally means “little man urinating”, and shows a little bronze boy peeing into the fountain. Hilarious? Yes, that’s about it. If you really plan on visiting this place, let us tell you beforehand that it is not worth visiting. The statue is small and is surrounded by hordes of tourists, so you will hardly get a glimpse. If you are passing by the city center, do stop by and take a hilarious picture, but otherwise, do not bother visiting Manneken Pis. Instead, visit other historical landmarks in the city.

Robot Show, Tokyo

Japan Robot Restaurant, Purple, Plant, Music, Performing arts

A lot of travel guides will urge you to include the Robot Show in your travel itinerary in Tokyo.

However, do remember that it is quite an underwhelming experience, and not worthy of your time and money. Instead, you can explore the nightlife and culture of Tokyo, which includes lots of exciting stuff like kabuki performances and small whiskey bars. There is absolutely nothing good about spending 70 dollars on watching weird robots and the fancy headache-inducing lights on their heads.

Times Square, New York City

Crowne Plaza Time Square, Cloud, Building, Skyscraper, Sky, Daytime, Light, Infrastructure, Billboard, Architecture, Lighting

If you ask anyone from New York, they will tell you that Times Square is a place that you have to avoid at all costs! If you are headed to one of the Broadway shows, you will pass through the iconic Times Square where you will find weirdly costumed characters and neon billboards, and that is just about it. The restaurants lined up along the street are all tourist traps, with ridiculously overpriced food items. You can avoid this overpriced, overcrowded place and instead enjoy other places in New York City.

The London Eye, England

Soho Café, Sky, Plant, Street light, Blue, Light, Nature, Purple, Tree, Electricity, Architecture

While the London Eye does offer quite incredible views, it is ultimately nothing more than a glorified (and overpriced) Ferris wheel. Basic tickets cost £27 (around $35) but with a long queue, while the express ticket costs £37 (around $48). If you just want to enjoy a great view of the city, forget the London Eye and head over to the One Tree Hill and go to the rooftop bar of One New Change shopping center. You can also get a great view of the city from Primrose Hilltop.

The Little Mermaid Statue, Copenhagen

Little Mermaid Statue, Water, Sky, Cloud, Boat, Azure, Sculpture, Statue, Watercraft

The city of Copenhagen boasts of many impressive landmarks, and the bronze statue Little Mermaid Status made by Edvard Eriksen certainly doesn’t make the cut. The rather unimpressive and small statue is quite far away from the city center and isn’t worth your time.

Instead, you can spend that time strolling along Copenhagen’s beautiful harbor Nyhavn, eating street food in Torvehallerne, and enjoying a great experience at the Tivoli Gardens amusement park instead.

Sacred Monkey Forest, Bali

Ubud Monkey Forest, Plant, Botany, Organism

Located in Ubud, the Sacred Monkey Forest in Bali is one of the most popular tourist attractions, albeit one you can altogether skip. Crowded with hundreds of tourists at all times who push and haggle to feed the monkeys and click selfies, the Sacred Monkey Park isn’t really worth the effort. Also, the monkeys get aggressive at times, so you wouldn’t want to be near one. If you are really fond of wild monkeys, you can spot them all over the country – from Uluwatu Temple to Mount Batur – and there is absolutely no reason to visit an overcrowded place to feed a monkey.

Champs Élysées, Paris

Arc De Triomphe, Land vehicle, Car, Sky, Building, Plant, Light, Street light, Infrastructure, Vehicle, Lighting

Travel guides in Paris often urge people to visit Champs Élysées, which happens to be the city’s most popular shopping avenue. Extending all the way from Place de la Concorde to Arc de Triomphe, Champs Élysées’s 1.2-mile length has all the world-renowned brand stores. From Adidas and Zara to Louis Vuitton and Cartier, you can find every store here. There are also fast-food chains like Subway, McDonald’s, and Starbucks on the street. To sum up, it has everything you anyway find in all the major cities of the world! If you seriously want to shop around, head over to Saint-Germain-des-Près or Marais instead.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy

Piazza Dei Miracoli, Sky, Building, Plant, Tower

One of the most iconic sites in the world, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is visited by millions of tourists every year. Right up there with other popular sites like Florence’s Duomo, Rome’s Colosseum, and The Vatican, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is quite grand. However, it isn’t really worth your visit, given that it is more than an hour and a half drive from the nearest city, Florence. Instead, you can head over to other interesting places like Siena, Tuscan countryside, Lucca, or San Gimignano that offer a lot richer history and architecture.

The Hollywood Sign, Los Angeles

Hollywood Sign, Sky

When we first got to see the Hollywood Sign, we were seriously underwhelmed and disappointed. After a long hike on a hot day that either begins from Brush Canyon Trail or Griffith Park on Mount Hollywood, you finally get to click a picture with the Hollywood Sign.

That’s about it! There are thousands of other places in Los Angeles where you can spend some quality time, so instead of taking a picture of the Hollywood Sign that you can anyway get from Google, spend your quality time exploring this beautiful city!
