8 Vintage Muscle Cars You Need to Drive Before You Die (4 of 5)

Mercedes SL 300 Gullwing

The original post-war era sports car, the Mercedes SL 300 Gullwing was by far the fastest automobile ever produced at the time of its production. It could reach speeds of a mind-blowing 160 mph, something that surprised a lot of experts back in the day who underestimated what Mercedes was capable of. Plenty of this model still survives today, although the most realistic way to see one in real life is by visiting the Petersen Museum in LA.

Ferrari 250 GTO

We’re going to be straight up with you on this one: you’ll never get a chance to see one of these in-person, much less get behind the wheel. Only 39 of this elegant model was ever made during the 1962 to 1964 periods in which it was released. Not surprisingly, it is regarded as the holy grail in terms of value and recognition. In 2014, one of them was sold at auction…for a mere $38 million. But before you get too discouraged, you’ll be happy to know that pretty much any 1960s Ferraris with a V12 engine will offer you an unforgettable driving experience, and they aren’t impossible to find.
