He currently holds Canadian citizenship by birth, U.K. citizenship as a result of his governorship at the Bank of England, and he became an Irish citizen in the 1980s, which he was eligible for due to his grandparents being born there before they immigrated to Canada. Although there are no laws that forbid Canadian prime ministers from being citizens of other countries, he intends to renounce his U.K. and Irish citizenship, as he doesn’t feel it is appropriate for the leader of Canada to possess multiple citizenships.
