10 Things That Were Once Taboo But Are Now Perfectly Acceptable

There was a time when we didn’t prioritize self-care out of fear that we’d be perceived as emotionally weak. Or we were hesitant to assert our right to decide our own path in life due to society pressures, in particular the feeling that we needed to meet the expectations set by others, whether it’s our parents or social circle. But thankfully we’ve entered a more enlightened period where we are able to make choices for ourselves without being ostracized. In fact, these behaviors are rightfully viewed as healthy and can lead to more fulfilling lives in the long run. Here are ten decisions that were once frowned upon, but have now become embraced.

1. Being welcomed and treated like anyone else, even with a disability

Until recently, individuals with learning differences, physical disabilities, or mental health challenges faced marginalization. Instead of receiving support, many were sent to institutions or locked away in bleak asylums when what they truly needed was patience, guidance, or a qualified aide. Kids who learned more slowly were mocked with slurs, bullied openly, and separated into “special ed” as if they didn’t belong in the same world as everyone else.

Today, the approach is far more compassionate. People who need extra help or a quieter space aren’t hidden—they go to resource rooms, places designed to support them without shame, making the world feel far more inclusive than it once was.
