10 Inspired Ways To Propose

The day you propose to somebody is already special and generally unexpected. But instead of doing the conventional thing and popping the question when they come home from work, why not find an extra memorable way to tell them you want to be together forever? Here are 10 ideas that will really blow their minds!

1. Recreate Your First Date

Remember the restaurant you went to for your first date with him/her? This is the perfect place to reminisce about all of the happy things that have taken place since you made the wonderful, fateful decision to get together. As you begin waxing nostalgic, this presents you with the perfect opportunity to get down on one knee and ask them if, just like you, they want the memories to continue for the rest of your lives!

2. Visit a Museum

Whether you want to visit a local museum or travel across the world to browse through the works of art at the Louvre, this is an amazing place to ask your partner if they will spend the rest of their life with you. What could be more romantic than giving them a kiss in front of Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss painting and then popping the question? Of course, the type of museum you visit doesn’t have to just contain art; if he/she is a science or history buff, they’ll love the idea even more!

3. Make a Custom Crossword Puzzle

If you have the connections (as TV host and comedian Jon Steward did when he proposed to his wife), you could call up the New York Times and ask them to insert your proposal into the puzzle! Otherwise, just use some creativity and come up with a crossword puzzle of your own to slip the question into.

4. Invite Your Friends and Family

Before you go through with this idea, a little disclaimer is in order. You first would have to be absolutely confident that your partner would be comfortable with having such a public proposal AND you’d want to be certain that they’ll say yes. If you are sure they will, then go for it! Imagine the look on their face when they enter the house and see your friends and family standing there with engagement balloons and a “Will You Marry Me” sign! Christmas would be a great time to do this, especially if the proposal is taking place in their childhood home.

Of course, if you want to avoid potential risks, you could propose to them privately while your friends and family wait at a restaurant, ready to celebrate when the answer is “Yes!”

5. Propose on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is already the day of romance, so why not make it a special day that the two of you can share forever as the day you proposed to them? Give them their chocolate and roses as usual, but then add that engagement ring as well!

6. Say Yes at Airport Arrivals

This one feels straight out of the movies. After they’ve returned from their long business trip, they are certainly expecting you to be there to greet them at arrivals, but what they aren’t counting on is the big sign with the question mark at the end. You’d even have a crowd of people to cheer after they answer in the affirmative!

7. Write a Song or Poem

This suggestion might not be something you feel very confident about, which is precisely why you should consider it! It will be completely original, romantic, and they are sure to never forget this special gesture. Or if you really feel like you’re up to it, you can always hire somebody else to write the song or poem for you.

8. Go Wine Tasting

The idea of proposing among the vineyards of northern California after sampling some of the region’s incredible wine sounds like a blast! You’ll be a little bit tipsy, but in the most pleasant way possible. With the grape vines serving as the perfect backdrop, you get down on one knee and ask them to marry you!

9. Propose at Sunrise or Sunset

If you are the type of couple that enjoys hiking together, then this is the perfect opportunity to propose. You can even plan an overnight camping trip with a view of some picturesque mountains and a lake in the background. Once the sun rises (or sets, if you prefer to propose in the evening), it is the moment when you ask them the question!

10. Arrange a Romantic Picnic

There is never really a bad time to propose, although a lot of people prefer to do it in the spring or summer when the weather is warm and comfortable. This is where a romantic picnic becomes the right setting to make this happen. Choose a hill at a park or even a part of a botanical garden away from other people to ask the question — just them and you.
