Easy Ways to Eliminate Fish Odor (2 of 3)

How to cut down on fish smells when you cook:

  • Take all that fish cooking business outside. Cooking your fish on the backyard grill not only makes it taste great, you never have to worry about the fish stinking up your house.
  • Baking soda is your friend. When frying fish in your kitchen, open a box of baking soda and leave it on the counter nearby. It will absorb the smell of the fish. It will be as if you didn’t cook fish at all, except that everybody will ask how you managed to serve them up hot, fresh fish if no cooking was involved!

  • Cook with the lid on as much as possible, especially if the fish smells especially bad. This will minimize the odor, although it obviously won’t eliminate it altogether.
  • Simmer in water. This not only keeps the smell at bay, it is also a healthier cooking alternative to frying.
  • Bundle with non-stick parchment paper. Wrapping those fishes in baking parchment before you cook them retains moisture in the fish while reducing the smell.
