Avoid mixing patterns or bright colors

Mixing colors and patterns can add a distinctive edge to your look, but being above 40 should not keep you from doing that. Von Sorella observes that colors and patterns can be used to create an interesting look, just make sure that you don’t use colors or patterns that clash with each other. Sorella doesn’t recommend layering animal or floral prints or mixing neon shades, but she definitely recommends having fun doing a little (or a lot) of mix and match.

Wear only and only basics

Wearing a basic T-shirt or plain sweater with a pair of jeans can seem an easy way of creating a minimal look. However, that doesn’t mean your outfit shouldn’t be as colorful as your persona.

Amy Voloshin, fashion designer and founder of Printfresh, has rightly observed that basics are not for everyone. She says she loves whimsical clothing, and if you like prints or embroideries, you can use them for years to keep your wardrobe flair and fun. So, there’s absolutely no reason for you to keep your wardrobe basic just because you’re above 40.

Loungewear is not for the outdoors

Who said comfy clothes are only meant to be worn at home? If you wish to wear loungewear on your outings, who’s stopping you? Whether it’s a pretty pajama set or a stylish swimsuit, experts suggest it can make for a great outfit if you can wear it the right way. Voloshin says you can safely wear those pretty pajamas and still look comfortable and chic.

Don’t style denim on denim

If you’re a worshipper of denims, live your Texas Tuxedo dream happily. Denim on denim can make for a warm and stylish look only if you know how to style it right. Jeneault recommends wearing different shaded denims together with statement accessories for keeping things stylish.

Wear apparel that flatters your body

Brand stylist for M.M.LaFleur, Nyjerah Cunningham, suggests wearing whatever you want and making that work for you. All in all, you should ditch all “fashion rules” and wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable. You don’t have to necessarily wear what other people with your body type are wearing. You don’t have to avoid something that people say won’t suit your body type. Basically, if you think you can make it look/feel good – wear it!
