8 Questions To Ask When Deciding On The Right Therapist (3 of 5)

What type of therapy would they recommend? How effective is this method for meeting your therapy needs?

There is no “one size fits all” approach to treating mental health conditions. For example, for patients who suffer from depression or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is most commonly used. On the other hand, psychotherapy is often effective for anxiety disorders, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and bipolar disorder. A qualified therapist should be able to offer a range of treatment options suited to your specific needs.

How long is a session? How often would they recommend meeting?

A therapist’s availability and how long the sessions last generally depends on how many patients they see. If their caseload is significant, they are more likely to limit the sessions to an hour at the maximum and might only have time to see the patient once a month. So if you feel that longer sessions and more frequent appointments would be best, that would factor into who you choose.
