Olive Oil

Manufacturers of olive oil are also culprits when it comes to mislabeling their products. For instance, it is estimated that around 80% of all olive oil that claims to be imported from Italy is actually from other countries like Morocco, Turkey, or Syria. In addition, a lot of olive oil isn’t 100% pure, even when it claims to be, with sunflower or vegetable oil mixed in to maximize profits. Frankly speaking, the only real way to play it safe is to buy olive oil produced in California. It might not be superior to the authentic Italian variety, but there’s a good chance that “Italian” olive oil comes from elsewhere anyway.

Saffron

Saffron is by far the most expensive spice in the world. In fact, a pound of the highest quality saffron can cost as much as $5,000! Most people don’t cook with saffron because the costs are so prohibitive, but if you happen to stumble across some that look like a bargain, chances are it is mostly poppy petals, turmeric, and sandalwood dye.
