Prior to being elected third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson was an accomplished diplomat and governor. In addition, he wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence. Oh, and he also literally bought humans and treated them as property. When looking back at his legacy, that was a pretty significant dent. But what rarely gets talked about is his pet mockingbird Dick. Dick served as Jefferson’s office mate, flying around the room and landing on his shoulder and desk as he pleased. They also did this nifty trick where Jefferson would place a berry or piece of fruit between his lips, and Dick would perch on his shoulder and gently pluck the food from his mouth.
