9 Times Actors Actually Lost Money Filming Movies

Most people think that once you get to “Hollywood celebrity” status, you become the talk of the town, your paychecks double, and in general, life gets easier. While this is often true, there are instances when a movie disrupts the norm. Instead of rolling in cash, the stars end up paying out of their own pocket, cutting their salaries, just to make sure their movie succeeds. In some instances, however, it reflects poor judgment.

Here are nine times actors actually lost money while making movies.

1. Will Smith

After Earth was intended to be Will Smith’s major breakthrough, as his company, Overbrook Entertainment, produced it. However, it ultimately became one of the most challenging setbacks in his career. Taking into account the $150 mil cost to make it and then another $100 mil on top for marketing stuff, the movie brought in $234 million worldwide. While $234 million is a significant amount, the film still incurred a loss of at least $6 million. Smith later basically claimed that the movie bombed hard enough to make him rethink his life.
