Mélanie Joly’s Growing Influence in Canada (3 of 5)

Career in the Federal Government

In 2015, two years after losing the Montreal mayoral election, Joly achieved a political comeback, winning a seat in Parliament, representing Ahuntsic-Cartierville. During her time as an MP, she has held several important ministerial positions, the first being Minister of Canadian Heritage, named a Young Global Leader (YGL) by the World Economic Forum, a recognition given to individuals under 40 who have made significant achievements. She was Minister of Tourism, Official Languages, and La Francophonie from 2018 until 2019, Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2021 until May 2025, and since then has served as Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development.

Current Relevance and Recent Updates

As Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development, Joly has focused much of her energy on “Buy Canadian” initiatives in response to the trade war drama brought on by Trump. She has also worked on updating Canada’s aerospace program. At the 2026 Liberal Convention in Montreal, she participated in key economic panels, solidifying her role as a primary architect of Canada’s post-Trudeau industrial and trade strategy.
