Ivanka’s ‘Domestic Goddess’ Persona
For someone with an estimated $800 million fortune, Ivanka has tried hard to present herself as a “domestic goddess.” In 2016, she even posted “#LifeHacks” tips for tidying up and making a small apartment feel spacious. But not everyone is buying this image. In a performance art piece titled “Ivanka Vacuuming” by Jennifer Rubell, the artist played a version of Ivanka, cleaning a carpet in high heels and encouraging viewers to throw crumbs onto it, which “Ivanka” would vacuum with a forced smile. Ivanka responded on social media, suggesting that women should uplift each other rather than tear each other down.
Shameless Self-Promotion
Ivanka didn’t miss an opportunity for self-promotion during the 2016 Republican National Convention. Wearing a pink dress from her own clothing line, she discussed labor laws and women in the workforce. The next day, her social media account posted a link to buy the exact dress, which quickly sold out. Some found this move a little too opportunistic, particularly since the dress, although representing “American labor,” was manufactured overseas.
