In 2017, after Johnson announced he was planning to create a Fast & Furious spinoff based on his character Luke Hobbs, Gibson was none too happy about it. Upset that this would push back the production of the 9th Fast & Furious movie, Gibson, who plays Roman Pearce in the franchise, threatened to boycott if Johnson appeared in it. He confessed that while his intentions at the time were good, the way he tried to get the Rock to return to wrestling had been done the wrong way.
