Joy Crookes paid tribute to her South Asian heritage at the 2020 Brit Awards. She wore a Mongas London yellow and gold bridal lehenga, and matched it with a sari top and dupatta, which is a form of scarf. “It goes beyond representing Bangladeshi culture, it’s representing myself. I want to be able to feel like anywhere I put my foot, no one can question that I belong there,” Crooked said.

The Oglala Lakota and Han Gwich’in model more traditional garb to the 2022 Met Gala to raise awareness and boost representation of indigenous peoples in spaces where they are traditionally underrepresented. Chasinghorse is a model, land protector and climate activist, and reflected that she felt lonely during her attendance at the 2021 Met Gala. According to Insider, Chasinghorse also wore body art, traditional tattoos and jewelry, which she said helped her to remember and acknowledge her ancestors, and in turn, not feel so alone while on the red carpet.
