7 Times Celebrities Attended Red Carpet Events Without Footwear

Even if you’re a regular commoner, you can most likely afford to buy shoes, although you probably aren’t dropping $500 on a pair of Air Jordans. But who knows. We don’t know you, although we wouldn’t mind being friends if you’re open to the idea. But we digress as usual. Celebrities not only own shoes, they typically own dozens if not hundreds of them. And we aren’t talking about the New Balances that your middle-aged high school social studies teacher fancied. They buy diamond studded shoes because they can. But from time to time, famous folks surprise us by attending red carpet events sans footwear. We’re going to talk about this because it’s a slow news day. Or at least we can imagine it is when you happen to read this article.

Back in 2016, Julia Roberts, aka “Tinkerbell”; aka “George Clooney’s best platonic friend somehow” attended the Cannes Film Festival wearing a black Armani Privé gown that probably cost more than your boss’s car. She was there ostensibly to promote her film “Money Monster,” but what really got everybody’s attention was the fact that she neglected to bring shoes with her. We can only assume she had difficulty getting them through customs because they were made from the fur of some endangered woodland creature. But in any event, it caused a mild stir given that Cannes has a strict dress code that calls for shoes, but obviously one they weren’t going to enforce. Although it certainly would have been interesting to see a couple of large bouncer types usher her out of the festivities for such a blatant and earth-shattering violation of decor.

Shailene Woodley is a mighty fine actress with a Sundance award and a few Emmy nominations under her sleeve. But she isn’t likely to secure any lucrative shoe endorsements anytime soon given her apparent distrust for them. Walking around barefoot seems to be her thing, and this tradition continued when she attended a screening of her movie “Spectacular Now” back in 2013.

Lena Dunham believes that two things in this world are meant to roam free: chickens and feet. Yes, indeed. While walking around without heels on the red carpet is not uncommon (as this article demonstrates), attending the Met Gala with uncaged feet is downright scandalous!

If you were to guess the one celebrity that would be inclined to walk around the red carpet barefoot, we bet you’d guess Zooey Deschanel. It would be an extremely wild and lucky guess, but you would indeed be correct! Given that she looks like a whimsical fairy without a care in the world, why wouldn’t she make a statement like this?

Way back in 2003 while attending the L.A. premiere of “Charlie’s Angels 2: Full Throttle,” Cameron Diaz appeared alongside costars Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu without shoes! Gasp! Was it because she is so much taller than the other cast members? That’s certainly our assumption! Regardless, she pulled it off really well.

When it comes to attending Galas without shoes, nobody seems to do it as frequently as Kristen Stewart, or “Sten Wart” as the hip kids might say. There was the time when she also broke the Cannes festival fashion rules. And let’s not forget when she showed up barefoot at the American Ultra red carpet, and we all remember when she brought Canada to a complete halt when she arrived at the Toronto International Film Festival without so much as socks on!

Sean Astin Feet

Sean Astin deserves an honorable mention for being the only guy to make this list! He arrived at the 2005 premiere of “Kingdom of Heaven” with a nifty blazer and jeans, but nothing to cover his feet. He certainly can’t use the ol’ “but high heels hurt” excuse, unless he has some private habits that he’d rather not divulge in. Either way, his lack of shoes is certainly consistent with his Hobbit days, so that probably explains this particular decision.
