Atonement (2007)
While this film is definitely famous for its green-dress sex scene, the movie beyond that is still a tragic story. It focuses on the doomed love affair between a wealthy young woman and the son of her housekeeper. It’s a similar story to Romeo and Juliet, they both deeply love each other but circumstances beyond their control keep them apart.
What Maisie Knew (2012)
Based on an 1897 novel by Henry James, the modern adaption of it captures the quiet heartbreak of the book perfectly, following a neglected young girl whose parents were too busy fighting to put her own needs first.

A young woman in the former Soviet Union who gets neglected so much she has to turn to sex to survive is a painful-to-watch film that also concludes ambiguously with a pair of parallel endings.
