36 Popular Songs That Artists Regret Creating (6 of 7)

Creep – TLC

Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes didn’t particularly care about this big hit. Especially, since this song revolved around women who cheat on their cheating partners to make them jealous. In the documentary The Last Days of Left Eye, she claimed she didn’t want this song to be released in the first place. She went as far as to state she would be wearing black tape over her mouth during the music video if it ever came to that.

To this day, she resents the song’s message and in a subsequent remix, she offered advice on safe sex in her verse.

Your Love – Nicki Minaj

An early song in her career, but definitely a favorite for many – except for Nicki herself. Of course, there were plenty of other songs she’s regretted making as well:

“I like the video but…my first ever solo song on Billboard was ‘Your Love.’ To this day I like the video but I hate the song. I could go on and on. I hate ‘Starships.’ I was like, ‘Why did I do that?’ I really think that every time I hear it.”

Come & Get It – Selena Gomez

Looking back on her Stars Dance hit song, Selena has some regrets over how the track sounds these days.

“I love Stargate more than anything, but it’s very difficult for me to perform live. It’s not my song. To me, it sounds like a Rihanna reject. I’m currently in the middle of figuring out what it’s going to sound like. I’m working with Stargate on the new album—they did ‘Same Old Love’ with me—and we’ve created such an awesome relationship. That was just in the beginning. I was so young. I was wanting a hit: ‘I don’t know if I need a hit, but maybe I do so people can respect me?’ I’m grateful what [‘Come & Get It’] did for me, so it’d be stupid not to acknowledge it.”

Break a Sweat – Becky G

She doesn’t necessarily hate this hit song, however, there are some massive regrets about how the music video turned out.

“Basically, in the music video, I think there’s a part where I look like a Chipotle burrito. I hated one of the outfits so much. I had this hood on, and I had these weird glasses on. And the director was like, ‘Make sure you keep the hood up!; And it was, like, so tight. I literally looked like a Chipotle burrito, it was terrible. I’m crying because I’ve never admitted that out loud, and the only person who knows that is my mom. Cause I actually cried about it. I was so young, I did not have any clue what was going on.”

Royals – Lorde

It won a Grammy and was a massive hit and all around, Lorde doesn’t have a lot of hatred for this song. Although, she thinks it doesn’t represent her best work as an artist. In an interview with Seventeen, she revealed:

“I understand why it worked and why it was kind of a hit, I can see those qualities in it, but at the same time there’s part of me that’s like…” she groans, “‘these melodies are just not as good as something I could have written now’, or like ‘I definitely wouldn’t have written this lyric this way if I have written it now’…It definitely feels like a bit of a relic now.”
