Mamdani vs. The Billionaires: What Nyc’s Class-War Mayor Is Actually Doing

Few American politicians have embraced social media politics quite like Zohran Mamdani. During his campaign for mayor of New York City, he garnered a lot of attention for his heavy use of vertical video as well as an economic message that resonated with New Yorker voters who were frustrated with skyrocketing rent and food prices. However, what truly distinguished him was his openly confrontational rhetoric directed at the ultra-wealthy, a message that played a significant role in his overwhelming victory in the November 2025 elections. Fast forward to today, several months into his administration, and it is clear he is attempting to govern in much the same way he campaigned, much to the relief of his supporters and disconcertation of critics. So where do things stand? Let’s take a look.
Keeping His Campaign Promise
During a late-April interview on MSNBC’s MSNow, Mamdani, who was joined by Catherine Wilde, a member of his transition team, and Morris Pearl, chairman of the board at Patriotic Millionaires, defended both his communication strategy and his increasingly aggressive tax agenda. The mayor, who made “tax the rich” the centerpiece of his campaign, recently unveiled a new proposal targeting second homes valued at more than $5 million. The idea became yet another viral social media moment, featuring his trademark clipped, direct messaging. In one of the videos, he reminded voters that when he ran for mayor, he promised he was going to tax the rich, and now that was going to become a reality.
